The Honourable Tom Burns AO

Chairman of Queensland China Council

Mr Tom Burns is an eminent figure in Australian political circles with outstanding achievements in over thirty years of political life. He also served for more than twenty five years as a parliamentarian in the Queensland State Parliament.  Mr Burns had held the post of Deputy Premier for over six years in the Labor Government until he retired in 1996.

In July 1999 Mr Burns was appointed Chair of the Queensland China Council.  In January 2001 he was awarded an officer in the Order of Australia for his contribution to Australia-China relations over the past 30 years.

In the same year he received the Gold Magnolia Honorary Award from the Shanghai Government for his contributions to Chinese-Australian relations.  He was the first Australian to be awarded this award.  Mr Burns has been fortunate in becoming one of a very few Australian political figures to have met four generations of Chinese leaders.

Mr Peter Low manages the Australian Raw Material Traders Pty Ltd with three other Directors.  He is Director of the Port of Brisbane Corporation since July 1999 and is also Director of Byte Power Group Ltd since March 2004.

Mr Low has been the Executive Manager of the Valley Business Association, Fortitude Valley from June 1998 to April 2001  Mr Low is one of the three founders of the Valley Business Association and was Director from 1991 to 1997 and President of the Association from October 1996 to September 1997.

Mr Low has been the President, Vice President and Director of the Cathay Club (now Cathay Community Association Incorporated) from 1985 to 1996.  Mr Low is the Vice-President of the Cathay Community Association Inc since 2001.

Mr Low possesses substantial business experience over the last decades, including:

·         Wholesaler in soft goods and bakery products from 1985 to 1996;

·         Managing Director of a Cut Price Supermarket at Salisbury from 1980 to 1984; and

Dr Louis Y. C. Lu

Dr Lu is a prominent member of the Taiwanese community within Australia. As the Chairman of the Taiwan Trade Centre, Dr Lu has been strongly promoting Taiwan-Australia links and has been associated with the Taiwan Institute in Australia for over 10 years and currently is the institutes Secretary General.  Dr Lu has also been an adviser to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission in Taiwan for the past 9 years. Mr Yau is an entrepreneur and designer.  He has 25 years work experience in Australia, Hong Kong and China, specialised in townplanning, masterplanning, building and landscape design.  His business won a business achiever award and is a top 400 privately owned business in Queensland.

 

Mr Yau has high standing in the development industry. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers Australia and Fellow of Geological Society.  He has been the Chair of the Management Panel of the Institution for over 10 years and published six technical papers.

 

Mr Yau has completed several large construction and building projects in China and is actively involve in enterprises matching between Queensland and China.  He has particular skills in mediation and Australian-Chinese culture in dispute management.

 

Mr Yau is the Chair of the QEII District Health Council, Convenor of the National Liaison Council of Chinese Australians and President of Hong Kong Association.  He received the Multicultural Service Award in 2000 and a Centenary Medal in 2003.

 

 

 

 

Professor Colin Mackerras PhD, FAHA

(Chairman of Educational and Cultural Subcommittee of Queensland China Council and Special Advisor to the Queensland China Council)

Professor Colin Mackerras is one of Australia's leading China scholars. He has visited the country over thirty times, living there as a teacher and researcher on several occasions, the first being from August 1964 to September 1966. He has published numerous books about China, especially its minority nationalities, theatre and history. He has worked in in China studies at Griffith University, Brisbane, since January 1974.

Professor Mackerras has been very active promoting the study of China and Chinese in Australia. In December 1999, Professor Mackerras was awarded a medal for outstanding contributions to Australia-China cultural relations. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in November 1999 for his contributions to scholarship, especially about China. In April 2003, he was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Governor-General of Australia “for distinguished service to education and international relations”.

Mrs Lee was born in Taipei and is a permanent Australian resident. Mrs Lee holds an MBA and has diverse business interests in education exports, construction and design. Currently Mrs Lee is the managing director of a number of enterprises including the Royal Brisbane International College, the Dynamic Management Group Pty Ltd, and Royal Constructions.

In addition to her business interests Mrs Lee is also Director of South Bank Business Association, Honorary Advisor of World Arts & Multi-Culture Inc. Jenny Wong

A Singaporean by birth, Ms Jenny Wong is now an Australian citizen and has been residing in Australia for 24 years.  Ms Wong has been living on the Gold Coast for the past 14 years and is a prominent community member with extensive business interests in Asia and Australia. Since 1994 Ms Wong has held the position of President of the Gold Coast Chinese Club.  Ms Wong is also a member of the Gold Coast Art Centre Committee; the Griffith University Nathan Campus Multi- Faith Centre Committee; the Centenary of Federation, the Gold Coast Olympic Committee, Trustee for Queensland Performing Arts and Council for Multicultural Australia.

 

 

 

 

Kee Cheung Cheung BSc, PhD

Dr Kee Cheung was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Australia in 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Ph.D. degree from the Australian National University and a Graduate Certificate in Management from the QUT.

Dr Cheung is a NAATI accredited translator and a qualified Justice of the Peace. He is currently the Acting Pathology Laboratory Manager at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, and is an Honorary Research Consultant to University of Queensland.

Dr Cheung has served on the executive committees of various community organizations including Ethnic Broadcasting Association of Qld, Chinese Ethnic Broadcasting Association of Queensland, Queensland Chinese Forum, Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland, and recently the Lions Club. He won the Queensland Multicultural Service Award in 2000. Dr Cheung is also a Director of P.A. Travel.

Dr Peter Yeoh is a Malaysian Chinese by birth and emigrated with his family to Australia in 1985. With an extensive business background in construction Dr Yeoh is a well-known figure within the Brisbane Chinese business community promoting business and cultural ties with China.

Angela MacDonagh

Angela MacDonagh holds the position of Deputy Director-General, Trade and International Operations, Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

 

Angela was appointed to the position of Assistant Director-General, Client Service Strategies and Planning, in the former Department of State Development in November 2000.

 

Prior to this appointment Angela was the Executive Director of the Department’s Timber Task Force and held various senior positions within organisations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet as well as working as a consultant in the health industry sector.

 

 

 

 

Yvonne Wu

Ms Yvonne Wu was born in Shanghai and educated in China and the United States and holds a Master’s Degree in Asian Studies from the University of Iowa, where she later lectured in Chinese.  Ms Wu was previously a university lecturer of English at Fujian Teachers’ University.  Ms Wu is an accredited Chinese/English professional translator.

 

Ms Wu worked for Brisbane - based company Hua Lian (China Link) from 1986 to 1989, providing trade consultancy services to Australian and Chinese clients relating to markets including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.  Since 1990, Ms Wu has been working as the General Manager of Brisbane-based Taipei Australia International Investments Pty Ltd, which specialises in property developments for overseas investors.

 

Ms Wu is a Management Committee member of the Queensland Chinese Forum and Vice President of the Australian Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

 

 

 

 

Deborah Lei

Ms Deborah Chao-Fong Lei was born in Taipei, Tawian, and was awarded a degree in International Business from Griffith University in 1992.  Ms Lei founded property development company East West International Development Pty Ltd in Queensland 1996.  East West has since developed into a major company with interest in development, construction, trade, investment and the food industry, and offices in Queensland and Shanghai.

 

In recognition of her work in developing relationships with China with a focus on the Ipswich region, Ms Lei was appointed an Honorary Ambassador for Ipswich City in 1999. 

 

Ms Lei is a member of the Urban Development Institute of Australia, a special advisor to the World Technopolis Association (based in Korea) and a member of the Brisbane-Shenzhan Sister City Committee.

 

 

 

 

Jeannie Mok

Mrs Jeannie Mok was born is Malaysia and educated in Malaysia, New Zealand and Queensland.  Prior to migrating to Australia as a business migrant, Mrs Mok was an English lecturer at the University of Malaysia for eight years.  Mrs Mok has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/ Education, Master of Arts (Hons) in English, Diploma of Educational Studies, and a Diploma of Education.

 

Mrs Mok is currently the Foundation Principal/Managing Director of the Asian Pacific Institute and the Director of the Multicultural Centre.

 

From 1999-2001 Mrs Mok was a member of the Premier’s Council for Women and in 1998 was the recipient of the Queensland Multicultural Service Award.  In 2003 she was awarded with the Centenary medal.  She has held a number of positions on community oriented boards and councils and is currently a member of the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council.

Professor De Lacy is Chief Executive, Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre. STCRC, which was established by the Australian Government as part of its CRC program. 

 

It is a partnership between 16 universities and more than 30 industry and government partners in each State and Territory of Australia. It has research programs in travel and tourism: environment, infrastructure, technology, business and management.

 

Previously Professor De Lacy was Dean of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of Queensland and holds a continuing chair in environmental policy at that university.  Professor De Lacy has extensive research and project experience in Asia, in particular China.
